Help! Pefreably from a guy or older adult with dating experience!?

Ok,so ive been talking to this guy named Scott for about 5 months. After about a month we both addmitted we liked each other. We always havnt gotten along but in the end we came back like nothing happened. Last night i thought he hung up from the 3 way phone call with me and my bff Anna and i told her EXACTLY how i felt about him. And he heard. Then Anna hung up an we talked about it. He said that we would never date because he hurts every girl he dates and he couldnt ever stand to hurt me. Is that an excuses to say he doesnt like me or does he really care about me? I mean hes always been here for me and everything. Kinda like a good boyfriend except he never asked me out.
