Why do theists cite their religious texts as proof of their religion?

I mean, don't they realize that their books are the basis of claim for a religion? NOT it's proof. It would be like saying "I have a millions dollars, don't believe me? Well , I just said i did, So it must be true" Are people seriously this dim witted? It's depressing just thinking about it.
